BILLY PAUCH OPENS SEASON WITH MODIFIED VICTORY AT EAST WINDSOR SPEEDWAY FRIDAY NIGHT

EAST WINDSOR, N.J. ~ Veteran Billy Pauch proved to all that he is a candidate for the 2002 Modified stock car driving title Friday night (April 26) as he raced to victory in the season-opening Southside Auto Body 25-lap main event at the East Windsor Speedway. The victory, Pauch's 115th at the half-mile clay oval, might very well have been one of his toughest.

Stockton's Ryan Kerr was the first leader of the contest and proved to be a tough competitor. Kerr led the 24-car pack early in the contest while Pauch and a host of others raced toward the front. With just a handful of laps in the books, former champ Jimmy Horton of Somerville charged into second while Pauch moved into third. Pauch then attempted to improve his position and finally did so on lap 14 as he dove to the inside of Horton in turn four traffic.

A caution for a spin then put Pauch right on Kerr's rear bumper, but this race was far form over. Kerr and Pauch battled side-by-side on the restart and continued to do so for the next four laps. Pauch was finally able to slip into the lead on lap 19 before he raced on to the win.

Horton followed Pauch and Kerr at the checker flag, with Kenny Brightbill of Sinking Spring, Pa., fourth and defending champ Doug Hoffman of Allentown, Pa, fifth.

Art Liedl, Jr. of Somerville also proved to fans that he is primed for a second straight title as he won the 20-lap Sportsman main event from 20th spot. Richie Pratt, Jr. of Hurffville led most of the event before Liedl and Mike Lyons of Hightstown raced by in the closing laps. John Gray of Clinton and Folsom's G.R. Smith completed the top five.

Rob Ormsbee of Jackson, a five-time winner in 2001, did not forget his winning ways during the off-season as he raced to victory in the Street Stock 15-lap feature race. Ormsbee took the lead from eventual runner-up Paul Marra, Jr. of Bordentown on lap five and never looked back. Keith Flores of Jackson was third, with Weldon Collier and Kevin Bifulco finishing fourth and fifth.

Fans got a taste of the new Limited Sprint Car division on Friday night as Dwayne Lawlor beat Jeff Taylor and Bill Miller to the checker flag in a
15-lapper.

Friday night racing now continues weekly at the East Windsor Speedway with the first green flag waving at 7:30 p.m. This Friday evening, May 3, the Modifieds battle in a 25-lapper, with the Sportsman cars racing 20-laps and the Street Stocks competing in a 15-lapper. The Limited Sprint Cars will also return.
