KENNY BRIGHTBILL WINS FIRST MODIFIED RACE
OF THE SEASON
AT EAST WINDSOR SPEEDWAY FRIDAY NIGHT
EAST WINDSOR, N.J. ~ Former driving champion Kenny Brightbill of Sinking Spring,
Pa. raced to his first win of the young season at the East Windsor Speedway Friday night. It was Brightbill's 42nd career victory at the half-mile clay
oval.
Brightbill raced from 12th in the Modified stock car field and took the lead near the half way point of the 25-lap main event when he raced past early leader
Scott Flammer of West Milford. Soon Billy Pauch of Frenchtown and Jimmy Horton of Neshanic Station moved into the top three to set up a battle for the win to
the checker flag.
The finish of the race had the fans on their feet when a yellow flag for a minor
spin forced a restart with one lap remaining. For that final circuit the trio raced around the half mile clay oval in tight formation before Brightbill, Pauch
and Hor ton crossed the finish line "under a blanket." Doug Hoffman was fourth and Wade Hendrickson was fifth.
John Romano of Englishtown grabbed his first win in the 20-lapper for the Sportsman racers after starting in the 14th position. Jeff Acolia of
Robbinsville led the first 12 laps of the contest, while Romano charged to the front. Romano took command on the 12th lap, but Acolia stayed right with him
and swapped the lead several times before the finish.
At the stripe Romano was chased by Stockton's Rob Gallmayer, with Acolia, third,
Barry Christ of Piscataway, fourth and defending champion Art Liedl, Jr. of Flemington, fifth.
Defending Street Stock driving champ Al Cheney III of Cranbury was the winner of
the 15-lapper for the full-fendered cars, taking the lead on an early race restart. Pat Freiberger of Allentown was right with Cheney most of the way
before finishing second, with Jackson's Rob Ormsbee, third, Carol Whitehouse of Hamilton, fourth and Brick's Richie Byrne, fifth.
Dwayne Lawlor won the 15-lap main event for the Windsor Outlaw Sprint Cars, holding off challenges from Jeff Taylor before Ron Janney moved in for second in
the closing laps. Bill Miller and John Barnett completed the top five.
Friday night racing continues weekly at the East Windsor Speedway with the first
green flag waving at 7:30 p.m. This Friday evening, May 17, the Modifieds battle
in a 25-lapper, with the Sportsman cars racing 20-laps and the Street Stocks competing in a 15-lapper. The Limited Sprint Cars will also return. The night
will be a special one as it will serve as the "Bill Nichols Memorial," in honor of the much respected track official who passed away due to natural causes
several years ago.
